Do you ever feel like something sweet and warm to drink but you’re not in the mood for caffeine? You’d like something sweet but also healthy!? Our Bowl of Soul is just that. A nourishing blend of organic turmeric and warming spices, this brilliant cup will kick your day off with a dose of radiance or warm up your evening with a soul-satisfying nightcap.
When I was living at UC Santa Cruz at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, we used to make a version of this in the evening. We would pour almond or soy milk into a saucepan and add turmeric, cinnamon, pepper, and honey. It is the nicest nightcap but is also so good in the morning or in the afternoon.
The alchemy of turmeric, cayenne, and cinnamon works to enhance the potency of the anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-oxidant curcumin in the turmeric and to give it a sweet taste. We like to add honey but you can also add maple syrup or drink it plain.
1 tbsp turmeric paste (see recipe below)
1 oz honey simple syrup (see recipe below)
1 oz hot water
8 oz milk or milk alternative
1. Add turmeric paste (find the recipe for turmeric paste at the link at the bottom of the page!), honey simple syrup, and hot water to a small saucepan and stir until turmeric paste is dissolved in the mixture.
2. Add milk to the saucepan and heat over medium-high until hot.
3. Pour the mixture into a bowl or cup. Finally, sprinkle with cacao powder and enjoy!
1 oz honey
1 oz hot water
1. Combine honey and hot water in a small container or bowl and stir until combined.
2. Funnel into a glass container and keep refrigerated.
3. You can make a larger amount to keep on hand for future use, simply use equal parts honey and water in whatever amount you like.
2 oz turmeric powder
1-1/2 oz coconut oil
1/4 tsp cayenne powder
pinch of Himalayan pink salt
3/4 tsp cinnamon powder
4 oz water
1. Add all ingredients to a glass container.
2. Stir until all ingredients are combined and paste is smooth.
Note: Turmeric paste keeps refrigerated for 10 days.
