International Tea Day: May 21

Written by Sarah Scarborough | May 19, 2020 9:33:00 PM

For the first year ever, the U.N. has declared an International Day of Tea in support of Millennium Development Goals and the importance of tea to a healthy planet and healthy people. Through this declaration, the U.N. is acknowledging that tea production and processing contribute to the fight against hunger, reduction of extreme poverty, empowerment of women and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, tea consumption provides health benefits and wellness to all who drink it.

Culturally, tea plays an important role in some countries. According to the U.N., tea is the world’s most consumed drink, after water. Commonly found at social events, many cultures have created intricate formal tea ceremonies. Others routinely set aside time with family and friends to enjoy tea and all that it offers. For some, tea is a source of income and a pathway out of poverty. For others, tea is a lifestyle, a ceremony and a point of connection with friends and family, and for still others, tea is a regular intermission during a hectic day - a chance to stop, center and breathe.

Now, the U.N. is acknowledging that tea production and processing contribute to the fight against hunger, reduction of extreme poverty, empowerment of women and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. Since 2001, Firepot has been working to connect tea growers with tea lovers to enhance the lives of both through Fair Trade, organic and ethical teas as well as the donation of 1% of all sales to women and wildlife through our membership in 1% for the Planet.  With a nearly 20 year commitment to improving lives through sustainable business, all of us at Firepot are appreciate of this designation, as May 21st is a significant acknowledgement of a world-wide emphasis on health for all.
